Modulational instability and nonlocality management in coupled NLS system

چکیده
Abstract. The modulational instability of two interacting waves in a nonlocal Kerrtype medium is considered analytically and numerically. For a generic choice of wave amplitudes, we give a complete description of stable/unstable regimes for zero groupvelocity mismatch. It is shown that nonlocality suppresses considerably the growth rate and bandwidth of instability. For nonzero group-velocity mismatch we perform a geometrical analysis of a nonlocality management which can provide stability of waves otherwise unstable in a local medium.

The nonlinear coupling of two scalar nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) fields results in nonfocusing instabilities that exist independently of the well-known modulational instability of the focusing NLS equation. A nonlinear Schrödinger NLS equation with an effect of viscosity is derived from a Kortewegde Vries KdV equation modified with viscosity using the method of multiple time scale. It is well known that the plane-wave solution of the NLS equation exhibits modulational instability phenomenon. In this paper, the modulational instability of the plane-wave solution of the NLS equation modified with vi...

The modulational instability, a destabilization mechanism for plane waves, occurs ubiquitously in spatially extended dynamical systems arising in fluid dynamics, nonlinear optics, atomic physics, and other disciplines. In this paper, we investigate analytically, numerically, and experimentally the modulational instability in a layered cubically nonlinear (Kerr) optical medium that consists of a...
